• Our church has had a site up and running for a few years now. It was developed poorly and just needs updated. We have purchased a new theme. I found a plugin that is supposed to allow me to work on the new theme without disrupting the current them. However, it does not work for me. The new theme always shows up.

I am needing advice on how to update to the new theme, yet still be able to have our current site live until we are ready to activate it.

I am familiar with WordPress and have been using it. However, I have never had to update a theme before. Can anyone give me any advice?

  • For a well established site, do this

    1. Keep the current site untouched
    2. Install another WordPress site in local machine (or online in subdomain)
    3. Export content from live site (Tools -> Export), and import into the development site
    4. Install new theme and make adjustment including plugin until complete
    5. Go to live site and install new theme and plugin from dev site.

This way the live site will perform normally during the development up to the finishing point.
