  • No problem ??

    Overall Guide:
    https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/move/

    Backup first:
    https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/backup/

    Changing some values:
    https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/site-url/

When you backup – and you MUST backup – makes copies of your original files, and work off the copies.
Once it’s all done, keep the copies for at least a few weeks while everything is tested.

If none of the above makes sense, post back ??

    Hi

Apologies if I should create a new thread, but I thought I’d post here as my need is very much the same.

I am moving host, although the domain will remain the same (but I would like to get WP up and running on the new host before doing the transfer).

I have tried following the instructions in all of the above links but when I try to put the data back into the new, empty database I am getting….

    MySQL said: Documentation
#1064 – You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ‘DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=6’ at line 28

The backups appear to have been created fine. That said, my server is running phpMyAdmin 2.6.1-pl2 and there are some extra options that do not appear in the screen captures in the instructions – I just left the defaults selected.

I hope I haven’t missed anything silly. Can anyone help please?

    Thanks, James

    It’s sorted!

OK, I’ve been agonising over this one, trying this and that, manually editing .sql dump files, and everything else I could think of, but with the help of some other threads it’s now fixed, so I thought I’d post my findings here for anyone else, like me, who finds themselves here in desperation!

The secret for me was to change the ‘SQL export compatibility’ option in phpMyAdmin 2.6.1-PL2 to MYSQL4.0, and hey presto, the restore worked first time.

Podz – the jaffa cakes are definately on me for all the resources you provide ?? Would it be worth adding a few comments to https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/backup/ as this seems to be quite a common issue?

    Cheers

    James

James – if I get time I’ll try and collate some of the stuff that has been posted recently as all this db info is invaluable.

I don’t understand the first backup step.

From the main login screen, select ‘Databases’

What login screen? Where do you find anything about phpMyAdmin?

    My WordPress doesn’t have that.

I followed the steps and my new wordpress blog seems to work fine. My wp-admin username and password are not working though. Help…..

Never mind… I got the answer to the lost password problem here:

    https://dodosmb.com/help/wppass.html

    .. and it worked too!

Thanks for the additional link, Podz!

Is there a way to test your db out on the new server BEFORE you transfer the domain over to the new server?

    thx
