How to trap archive routing to a 404 page

  • I have a custom Archive page and am using permalinks. Everything works fine, but if I access the archive by URL with site.com/2016/01 I am automatically routed to the 404 page. How can I prevent the routing to the 404 and let it pass into the archive page so that I can handle the processing and display?
