How to turn WordPress Blog into Reddit or Digg

I am leaving Pligg for WordPress. WordPress gets me a lot closer to what I want my site to do than Pligg does without a lot of coding. I need to spend time on content, not learning how to hack my CMS.

Anyway, a lot of people mention using a combination of TDO Mini Forms (I think Gravity Forms may also work) and Vote It Up.

I’m trying to do this right now (and complicating it with IntenseDebate, which overrides WordPress accounts – argh). I’m not sure how elegant it will work. Pligg does the user-submitted links thing pretty well (it’s all the other stuff it lacks that poses a problem for me). It would be nice if someone could come up with a single plugin designed for this explicit purpose. If you search on here or elsewhere, you’ll see there are quite a few people who want this Pligg-type functionality in their WordPress.

Buddypress Links looks great, but it doesn’t allow for automation when you post a blog entry for example.

It would be great to have a robust voting plugin that allows blog content to be voted as well as status updates voted on as well.

The problem I’m noticing is that users want to be able to tell who’se responded to their votes, their comments, who’se voted on something, from a single place.

I’m not sure that BuddyPress Links or TDO Mini Forms will give me much more than simply allowing new users to register as contributors. I’m still new to this WordPress system.

I’m not too worried about people subscribing to Vote activity. I just want people to be able to submit a link, provide some info, and have those links make it to the main page if it gets enough votes.

Of course we are! It would be wonderful to have a simple Reddit style plug-in to implement links into a buddypress system, one that syncs up with the exsisting blogs on the site. That would be amazing.

I think splitting the cost of hiring a developer sounds like a great idea. How do we proceed?

One key aspect of Reddit is the ability to simply post a question or story as in their “text” submissions.

Maybe a custom post type with some sort of ratings plugin (GD star rating?) so that all blog entries, links, comments can be rated and sorted.

Yes, I did start on the process of building another “reddit clone” as a plugin to run in WordPress, back under 2.9. But with a lot of the recent core enhancements, I started to wonder if it was even necessary. A theme that allows front-end posting, post formats (for a reddit; probably bookmarks, asides, images, and default), and a ratings plugin like GD is really all you need.

So, now I was thinking more in terms of making a theme or framework than a plugin. Only downside is that if you wanted to include your reddit alongside your usual site content, you would probably have to go with multisite.

I am looking for this functionality in a plug-in, as well. Any updates on the development of such a tool? I featured links and videos from around the blogosphere in my niche each week. I’d love to start crowd-sourcing it where other people can suggest content and links from other sites and then have others vote it up or down.

I’ve tried different like systems and voting plugins, but haven’t quite got it. “vote it up” is one, but I can’t get the voting buttons to work, can’t click on them. Like buttons don’t make a list of top likes and others are just bs. Something similar to reddit.com or digg.com. Thanks!

I was wondering if any of you figured out a way to accomplish this yet. I was told that Vote it Up` and TDO Mini Forms plugins can accomplish the reddit like voting of posts.

Just curious what you guys are using.
