I just tryed to install a plugin on my WordPress website (www.hitchhikersguidetotheocean.net). This plugin (if I remember correctly count-per-day 2.5) was only suitable for WP2.7 or higher. I didn’t know which version I’m using and thought that the worst thing that could happen is that the plugin wouldn’t work. I was wrong…

I can’t load the site anymore and can’t even login to the adminsite to deactivate the plugin. Does anyone have a clue what I can do about this?

  • ftp to site or use host’s file manager to rename the plugin
this deactivates it so you can log in

I’m new to wordpress… please forgive my obvious naivety.

    my problem is this:
a few days ago, while logged into wordpress admin, I attempted to re-write the line of code that references a “slider” on the theme called Picture Perfect. the line # is 22.

I was sure I was only changing ONE aspect of this line: which was the name of the slider. Seemed easy enough.

however, once the changes took effect (over 10 minutes, since I only learned about clearing cache AFTER the mishap) … my admin permissions no longer get me into my page, or WordPress at all.

it spit out the following error message, on a white screen:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting ‘,’ or ‘;’ in /home/michael2/public_html/wp/wp-content/themes/picture-perfect/functions.php on line 22

now when I enter my page’s URL, I get a white screen!!!!
I’m flipping out, I researched “reverting to an earlier version og the page” and nothing I’ve tried is working.

Is there anything I can do?
I’m convinced the ONLY problem with my page, is that one line of code I @#%!’d up.

    thanks for ANY help.
    PS.. my page URL is
    michaelfriendsart.com/wp

upload a frsh copy of the theme file you modified

Help, I just uploaded a theme and I’m having the exact same problem as oceanhitchhiker :I can’t load the site anymore and can’t even login to the adminsite to deactivate the plugin. Does anyone have a clue what I can do about this? On my hosting account I can’t find a file to change. All I see are the plugins but not the themes. Any thing else i could try or another solution. my site is https://gilmoursprinkler.org/ it’s just a blank page.

It sounds like you’ll have to manually deactivate all of your plugins. Follow this guide:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_deactivate_all_plugins_when_not_able_to_access_the_administrative_menus.3F

Hello thanks for your reply macmanx. my problem started when I changed themes for website. When i changed the theme, my website would not go back to the admin page. I then tried to go to my website and a blank page appeared I can’t load the site anymore and can’t even login to the adminsite to deactivate the theme. Does anyone have a clue what I can do about this? I tried the the website you gave me
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_deactivate_all_plugins_when_not_able_to_access_the_administrative_menus.3F

But that I believe is for plugins any more advice you could give me would be helpful.

FTP to your site – in the wp-content >> themes directory – rename the directory (folder) that has the wayward Theme – that will deactivate that Theme and WordPress will revert to the default Theme.

Thank you saildude. That sounds like the answer. but I’m not exactly sure how to ftp to my site. Do i have to go into my hosting account to do that? or do i need ftp software like filezilla? Thanks saildude.

Yes, you’ll to use an FTP client like FileZilla. If you don’t know your FTP login credentials, contact your hosting provider. This guide should help you to get started:
