How to update a wordpress theme and plugin without losing customization

  • I use child theme and previously spent lots of time on CSS customization to make the site looks cool. However, all the customization are gone whenever the theme or plugin updates. Sometimes i import the backup copy to restore the old setting, however, not all CSS customization could be stored.

    I wonder if there are any solutions that once set and i can forget it?

    If you put all your changes into the child theme, then they will be retained if the parent is updated. If, however, you installed a theme from some repository that a child of something else, then an update to that child will wipe out your changes.

    So, in my case, should i only update the parent theme so as to retain the CSS customization in child theme?
