I want to update my Ocean WP theme but I’m worried about messing up my site. I haven’t made any changes to php files but I have added various snippets of code to the Custom CSS/JS area of the theme, mainly with excellent help from forum member Amit Singh.

I’ve changed various things along the way in the ‘customise’ area – headers, blog style etc etc – I now realise I should have created a child theme earlier but I didn’t so I’m not sure how to proceed without running the risk of messing up things on the site.

Should I create a child theme now or something? If so, I’m not sure how to do this and how to make it adopt any Custom CSS/JS tweaks etc I’ve done to the site so far. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi @bondoc.
I can tell you from my own experience that to make a child theme when your website is customized already it’s a big mess.
But from your explanation you don’t have to create a child theme… Whatever you set in the customize area should be saved after theme update. You can copy the css lines to a txt file and paste it back after the update in case you need to. If you want to be extra safe, you can make a full backup before updating. Goodluck ??

Thanks for your advice – I appreciate it. That is good news for now although my concern will be for the future as it means the situation I have got myself into means I will either have to work out how to switch the site to a child theme or never make any changes to php files etc, I guess?
Thanks again for taking the time to offer advice.

@bondoc Happy to help, we learn from each other :]
Anyway, Iv’e just made changes to my original php since theme updates isn’t that often like plugins and I have a backup txt file where I put my code lines. in case I have an update, I just put the code back which is very easy

Thanks again – that’s very reassuring … I’ll follow your method of doing things in the future.
