How to upgrade theme file with SFTP?

  • My FTP is greyed out with the wrong settings so I can’t upload through wordpress. I know how to upgrade through SFTP, but when I dragged and dropped and replaced my old wordpress theme and activated the new one. My whole layout was messed up and I couldn’t access my posts.

    everything is fine now since I reverted, but how do I upgrade to a newer theme.
