• Heya guys! Sorry for the total “noob” post, but I honestly have no idea how to get this up and running. I am using the dainty theme (see here: https://dainty-demo.heartenmade.com/) and while it does not offer a gallery or portfolio in of itself, I was told that I could use this plugin. Is there a guide out there on how to use this? It doesn’t show up as a block when I edit pages and I don’t see it as a “menu item”.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hey! This plugin is super easy to use, but can frustrating at times so let me try to help get you started!

First install and activate the plugin. Once that’s done, you’ll see a new option appear on your admin dashboard menu called “Portfolio Items.” What this basically is, is a new post type for your website. Go into that menu link and you’ll see the option to Add New portfolio items from there. It works exactly like adding a new post using the classic editor.

These new posts will be added to a new page on your website (that you do not have to create manually) called Portfolio. Now this page won’t show up in your pages list in the dashboard, but it’s there! So once you have it installed and a portfolio item added, go to yoururl.com/portfolio

You should see the newly added items.

A common issue people are having is getting a 404 error once the portfolio plugin is added. This can caused for a few reasons. If you have a page entitled portfolio on your website before installing this plugin, please delete it and empty it from the trash because it will conflict with this plugin. Another thing is to save your permalinks twice once this plugin is installed if you are experiencing the 404 error and you don’t have a page or post entitled Portfolio on your website.

    Hope this helps!

Oh my goodness! Thank you so, so much for your help! I had a page entitled “portfolio” prior to the installation so I believe that’s why I couldn’t get it going, even after deleting it. I will try again! Thank you again so much for taking the time to answer ??

Another quick question for you that you may or may not know: is there an example of this portfolio feature actually in use? Wondering if it opens up new pages upon clicking or if it is something more static?

    Thanks!! ??

    Happy to help ??

Make sure to delete the page from your trash folder by going to Pages -> Trash -> Selecting Portfolio and under bulk actions deleting it.

Next go to Permalinks on your blog by going to Settings -> Permalinks. They should be set to Post Name. Save changes (even if already set to Post Name) so your permalinks can update and the plugin can take the Portfolio URL.

Here is an example of it being used:

And another example of how you can customize it to suit your needs:

Thanks again! You’re honestly a life saver. I appreciate you taking time to help me ?? I will definitely go ahead and do that. Out of frustration I did a complete reset, so I’ll just go ahead and start again using the info you’ve given.

And one more thing! (Sorry for all the questions); that second example where the posts are in categories is ideal for me — I’m a graphic designer/illustrator with work that falls into a large range of categories. Any tips on how that can be achieved?

Yup! It’s super easy. Under Portfolio Items you’ll see Portfolio Types. Think of each type as a category. So enter all of your types, then when making a new portfolio item make sure to add it’s type (on the right hand side you’ll see the option). Once you’ve done that the types will show up on your Portfolio page.

Hello and following your latest helpful reply, one more question please: how can you rearrange the different portfolio on the page? I have been using the page attribute number as a sorting key, is that it?

Also, how do you define the grid layout? I need 2×2 for example, not 3 columns.

    thank you
