How to use an icon in the site title or tagline

How can I use icon fonts in the displayed site title and tagline?
Regardless of using the “shortcode” or “i class” method I cannot get the icon font to display in the site title or tagline (eg – Settings > General – Site Title).
Thanks in advance for any tips!
