I have looked at the documentation for backwpup pro, but could not find information on the encryption functionality it provides. Would you point me to the correct page(s)? In particular, I am interested in: 1) how the encrypted backup is decrypted after retrieving it from the backup archive (is this automatic or manual), 2) does the encrypted data (i.e., the wordpress and database files) overwrite the current wordpress files and and database or is it staged to a temporary location on the site before decryption, and 3) what sort of encryption is used (I would like to evaluate the strength of the encryption algorithm) and where are the keys for the encryption/decryption stored (on the web site or do we need to provide storage space somewhere else?

    Thanks.

    Hello @dnessett
Thank you so much for contacting us, we have a detailed doc about BackWPUp encryption feature here: https://backwpup.com/docs/how-can-i-encrypt-backups-before-i-upload-them/, please help us check.

So basically, we use 2 encryption mode: symmetrical and asymmetrical

+ The symmetrical procedure works with a single key and is based on the popular AES 256 procedure (AES = Advanced Encryption Standard). The same key is used for encrypting and decrypting.

+ The asymmetrical procedure uses the RSA algorithm and the AES procedure. Here we generate a random AES-256 key, which is then used for the encryption. Additionally, the AES key itself is then encoded using the RSA procedure (hybrid procedure).

I hope my answer could help, please let us know in case you have any other questions.
