How to use Categories?

Maybe I am missing something, but we want to display documents by categories and yet, I see no way to assign media to categories inherent in WordPress. So I installed “Media Library Categories” and now I can assign categories. I created a test category, put some documents in it, then displayed a gallery on a page using this:
[dg category=”Intergroup Liaison”]
Also, tried using the slug:
[dg category=intergroup-liaison]
No errors now, but no documents are displayed.
