Hello, can you give a newbie some advices on how to limit (and if possible stop) bogus and fraudulent registration on my web site…

My site is in construction… It was hidden behind a protected directory for all the time I was building it… Today I removed the protection of the directory in order to have some people look at it…

In the very short time the directory was open to all, I received 8 registrations… I can’t help myself but to think that these are bogus and/or fraudulent… It seems very unlikely that these are legitimate users…

I have activated the captcha option in wp security, but it doesn’t seem to be enough…

    Any thoughts???

    Many thanks

    Pat

Hi the best method to protect yourself against spam or attempted logins to your website is by enabling one of the Brute Force features and some or all of the Firewall features. You can read more about it from the following links.

    Hello,

Well I kind of went into another direction with this issue.

I started to use the WP Spam Shield plugin.

Right after the installation of this plugin, bogus registrations stopped. I used to get 40+ bogus regsitrations a day and now, I only get legitimate regsitrations.

Now I’m trying to evaluate if I still need All in one security and firewall plugin… If you have some advices on that I’d be interested to hear them.

    Many thanks

I can’t find the plugin you mentioned above here in the repository. What security settings does that plugin have?

Did you also try the links I submitted above in reply 2?

    Hi,

Thank you for sharing. The plugin you mentioned only stops spam from getting through. All In One WP Security & Firewall does more than just stopping spam. If both work together I would definitely keep both plugins.

Remember spam is just one method of intruding in a website. There are other methods hackers use to corrupt a website.

If this answers your question can you mark this support thread as resolved.

Thank you. I’ll see if both can work together…

Since I don’t know much about wp web site’s security, my biggest fear would be that I implement security setting so high that it would prevent my site from working…

I’m afraid of over doing it and then impede on the site speed or functionality… Or the functionality of other plugin… Especially social share plugins…

Any thoughts on that. Is such a thing possible with all in one security and firewall plugin?

    Many thanks

Hi Pat, what you can do is read every option in this plugin. There is plenty of information against every feature for you to read.

Start by implementing all the basic, then slowly implement the intermediate features carrying out tests at the same time. Once you are happy with the previous features start with the advanced features, once again test every feature feature that you enable before going further.

Most features will work without a problem. However because of the thousands of different plugins here in the repository, different server settings it is not easy to maintain a plugin 100% functional with the aforementioned.

I hope the above helps you.
