• Hello!

I have just moved my wordpress to the root of my server, ad I have a problem. Since I have done it, I cannot use FTP anymore, I get the message “access denied”. I know that it’s because I’m using the pretty permalinks, but I don’t know how o fix this. I have read the codex about this, and I don’t understand…

    Do you have any advice?

My host provider is Network Solutions.

    Thank you! ??

  • ftp connections have nothing to do with whether or not you have an .htaccess or are using pretty permalinks. Theyre completely unrelated.

what are you using to make the FTP connections? an FTP client? If so, which one?

    With permalinks:
When I use a FTP client, it works. When I connect through my hosting provider, it says “access denied”.
    Without permalinks: everything works.
I’m on Network Solutions, I think I’m going to contact them about this.
But if you have any idea, I’d like to hear them!

thats how an ftp connection should be made, and like I said .. permalinks have no bearing, or an .htaccess or lack of one.

When I connect through my hosting provider, it says “access denied”.

Ive no idea how you are connecting, or what “it” is. sorry, cant offer much more.

Well, I contacted my provider and they told me what I already know. They told me “there is a problem with the code that is in the .htaccess file when you enable the permalinks, you should ask WordPress team about this. Maybe they have an alternate code, if not, the second solution is to put WordPress in a subdirectory.”
I already knew that, and there is a topic in the codex about this problem (if I understand it well), but I don’t know how to fix this. I guess it’s the mode_rewrite that causes this problem.

Thank you anyway for your answers.

ok, well youre either not articulating your problem accurately to either them or the people here.

Once again, whats in an .htaccess file has NO bearing one’s bearing to use FTP.

    NONE. NADA. NILCH.

    Neither do permalinks.

an .htaccess is for Apache. its NOT used for any FTP applications.

And as Ive already indicated, until someone understands this:

“When I connect through my hosting provider, it says “access denied”.”

Theyre not going to be able to provide much more to you.

Ok, You will be happy to read that I realised that I had not understand what the codex was about. Indeed, it had nothing to do with my problem.

Well, I don’t know how to explain my problem differently than what I have done until now [maybe because of my English (I’m French)]. Anyway, I moved my wordpress to a subdirectory and made a redirection to it.
I do believe you when you say it has nothing to do with permalinks, htaccess and FTP. I guess the problem comes from my provider since it works with ALL the FTP clients I’ve tried. So…

Thank you again for your time and patience! ??
