• HI, I have a blog hosted by BlueHost and the ‘Architecture’ theme from GoodLayers (if it makes any difference). When I went to setup permalinks, I got the message about updating the .htaccess file with the code. I have no clue where to find that file or how to get to it. I tried doing the SQL steps posted online for BlueHost but to no avail.

Is the .htaccess file accessible within WP or BlueHost? Step by step to getting it updated so I can have permalinks?

When doing that at WordPress Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks, you should not have to access htaccess directly.

Your htaccess file at BlueHost is in your public_html folder, and that is where your permalinks code should be written (as above) by WordPress. To edit that file directly, I use FileZilla and an SFTP connection:

    Hi, thanks.

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Using_Permalinks states

“When you create or update a “pretty” permalink structure, WordPress will generate rewrite rules and attempt to insert them into the proper .htaccess file. If it can’t, it will say something like You should update your .htaccess now and print out the rules for you to copy and paste into the file (put them at the end).”

So sometimes you do have to update the .htaccess file, at least according to WordPress’ own documentation.

    Thanks for your help,
    Jonathan
