• I’m trying to set up a fresh multisite install. In the instructions in the WP dashboard it tells you to update the wp-config.php file which works fine. Then I tried to apply the rules to htaccess it suggests (which the htaccess file didn’t exist so I had to create it). When I apply the rules I get a 500 server error and the message telling me to contact the administrator.

I did have an error previously showing up in the dashboard under Tools -> Network complaining about me not having a *: Virtual Host I think. Its not there now so I can’t totally remember. I’m using a named virtual host… is this related to the htaccess issue?

    thanks
    Bryce

Ask your host if you can use .htaccess files.

I am the host. Its a VPS.

    Is mod_rewrite enabled?

Also, the htaccess rules *replace* whatever was in there before. It’s not in addition to.

There wasn’t an htaccass in my public_html. So I had to create it. I was surprised that there wasn’t, I kinda thought the standard wordpress install would put one there but I must have been mistaken.

I will check the mod_rewrite. I’m pretty sure that it is though. I’ll post back in a bit.

You only need an .htaccess file on regular WP if you want Pretty Permalinks.

You need it for everything on MultiSite.

Mod_Rewrite was not installed by default by Unbuntu 10.4. Once I enabled it everything worked perfect. Thanks for the push in the right direction. I didn’t know Ubuntu Apache install didn’t install it by default.
