Htaccess problems with wp-admin

For a long time, I have been protecting the wp-admin directory via a cpanel htaccess password with no problems.

I have just changed the password and now every visitor to the front page receives a log-in request. I have double and double-checked everything and can see nothing wrong, and also checked there is no htaccess file in the root directory.

Any clues would be much appreciated.
