htaccess redirects, Cant get it to work

I’m getting a lot of 404 error codes because Google has my old permmalinks and I am trying to do a htaccess redirect but I can’ seem to get the syntax right. The old permalinks were;
/example.com/index.php/archive/year/month.The new permalinks are set to/example.com/year/month.What do I put in the htaccess file?
