htaccess username and password

The only username and password settings in BackWPUp that i am aware of are an FTP username and password. The only other thing i can think of is that you added BasicAuth / Directory password protection on your website. either in the wp-admin .htaccess file or somewhere else or your Server is a DSO / Apache Module configured Server.

Please post the exact displayed message that you are seeing and also go to the BPS System Info page and post this info below:

Http basic authentication

Is your blog behind a http basic authentication (.htaccess)? Then you must set the username and password four authentication.

I’ve noticed that the backups I’ve been doing have only been backing up the database. I thought that I had to put in the username and password in order to get the files to back up as well. So, I asked about the username and password for that reason. Any ideas?

Yep you have set up BasicAuth Directory password protection. Did you setup Directory password protection from within your Web Host Control Panel or did you setup directory password protection in your .htaccess file? Which directory did you add password protection too – just the wp-admin folder or other folders?

I don’t recall setting up directory password protection from within the Web Host Control panel. Although, my provider may have done using my username and password for my account. I’m not sure.

I basically used the AutoMagic buttons on BPS to set up htaccess protection. I activated bulletproof mode for the root folder and for the wp-admin folder. I activated ‘Deny All htaccess Folder Protection For The BPS Master htaccess Folder’. I also activated ‘Deny All Access’ for the BPS backups folder.

The only other security plugin I have installed is Wordfence, I don’t think it does anything with htaccess.

I thought that the htaccess files I created with BPS might have a username and password.

BPS does have example BasicAuth Directory protection example .htaccess code in the wp-admin .htaccess file, but it is commented out. I just added this code as an example for folks, but i personally do not use directory password protection nor do i recommend that folks use this either.

BPS does not automatically add directory password protection so what i recommend that you do is log in to your web host control panel and check the wp-admin folder in your web host control File Manager tool and check that folder to see if it is password protected. if it is then i recommend that you remove this. The wp-admin folder is already protected with authentication/login protection so it is silly to have 2 layers of password protection on this directory/folder.
