HTML in excerpt

I found this https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/do-not-strip-html-tags/ but there’s not a lot of info.
I was able to get the html tags to work but only by modifying the plugin file itself in visual-portfolio/classes/class-get-portfolio.php

I see that there are possible customizations here https://visualportfolio.co/documentation/developers/changing-default-templates-and-styles/ but when I try that with visual-portfolio/classes/class-get-portfolio.php it does not work.

Is there something I’m missing?

You can copy the template to your theme directory and change the code to manually get the excerpt. I can’t give you the exact code, you will need to make it by yourself.
