HTML Stripped from posts?

I’m somewhat new to WordPress and am setting up a site for a friend. I’ve discovered that I cannot use HTML in the posts. Anything I put in at all, whether with the visual or code editor, gets stripped when it hits the screen… anchor tags, paragraphs, images… I can only get plain text to come through. Any suggestions? I’m running a stock installation… no plugins or anything.
