• I’m getting the (in)famous http 500 error. I have already deactivated all plugins and changed theme but still get them.

I don’t know the mechanics of this error but I do notice that with fewer plugins enabled it is less frequent. Also it repairs by itself after a few minutes. Is this normal? also is it any indication of where to look for the solution?

Any ideas and suggestions are more than welcome!

  • Do you still get the error using the Twenty Eleven theme after resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

No but I can try, how do I reset my plugins folder? backup -> delete -> copy back?

Please see the link I posted above.

Ah sorry about that, the link did not show in the email message.

In any case, just tried your suggestion but I’m still getting the error. Any other thoughts?

Does your host use cPanel? If it does, then in the cPanel Error Log it will show the cause of the 500 error. For example:

[Fri Apr 08 06:08:14 2011] [error] [client 174.77.92.170] SoftException in Application.cpp:264: File "/home/username/public_html/wordpress/index.php" is writeable by others

If you do not have access to the error log, you should be able to contact your host and get it from them. That will make it easier to track down exactly what is causing the error.

Right, my email account is apparently marking these messages as spam. So I missed this last post. In any case, my host does use cpanel as I found out quite a bit later. And I’m getting memory errors.

I have detailed everything in this post:

    any ideas?
