    Hi,

I am trying to maintain a website which I did not set up myself. The health panel informed me that using a cache plugin was advisable, so I chose W3 Total Cache and installed it. Everything looked OK up to the point when I clicked “Activate”: Since then the only response when calling the website (also the Admin panel) is a blank screen in Firefox, or a “HTTP ERROR 500” message in Chrome.

Following some recommendations on the Internet, I have used FileZilla to rename the plugin and themes directory and use only an elementary .htaccess file, but all to no avail. It would appear that the installation of W3TC changed some very fundamental settings or files, which needs to be reverted.

How could I remove the cache plug-in and re-install it properly?

    Thanks

  • Delete the cache plugin. Try renaming individual directories for each theme and plugin, not the entire directory. I think you accidentally deleted something when you went to edit using filezilla. Check the file directory with cPanel to see if everything is fine.

When you have any server error, your first troubleshooting step should be to find out what’s really causing the problem… instead of renaming things willynilly.

Check your webserver’s error logs or turn on WordPress debugging. These should give you details of the 500 error so you can zero-in on the specific cause.

    Good luck!

Thank you! I modified wp-config.php as described in the description, but a debug.log file was never created. However, without any further action the site came online again, so it seems to have cured itself magically. ????♂?

Maybe someone else can do further research if a similar problem surfaces …
