http error message, picture upload fail

    Until very recently I have had no problems uploading images to post on my WP webpages, but suddenly all I get is “HTTP error” no other info. The picture does eventually appear in the gallery but won’t upload to the page and I have tried “edit” upon which it says the image doesn’t exist, please upload again. I have looked through the forums and tried disabling all my plug ins, but no joy. It will upload pictures that are already in the media library but will not add anything new to the library.
    I am a novice at all this and don’t understand some of the permissions (777?) etc that have been suggested. The site was set up for me and I’ve been managing it, so far ok, but I can’t seem to fix this. Could someone advise in very simple terms that a complete beginner (me!) can understand please? Running Mantra theme version 2.3.3
