Huge wp_postmeta on very small site

    I have a very small website (~14 posts) with a wp_postmeta which has 50,000 rows and is 92mb. It’s too large for my shared hosting package which means the hosts have taken the website offline.

    I’ve installed WP-Optimize and WPDB-Manager to clean things up, run optimize commands in MySQL and used various SQL commands I found on Google to try cleaning up the wp_postmeta table but nothing has made a dent.

    The only plugins I have are Akismet, Jetpack and the Database managing tools.

    Can anyone advise? I’ve read lots of articles and other forum posts but I think there must be a problem beyond optimisation and old post revisions etc.

    Any help would be much appreciated.

  • If you use a commercial theme or plugin and need support, please go to their official support channel. In order to be good stewards of the WordPress community, and encourage innovation and progress, we feel it’s important to direct people to those official locations. Doing this will provide the developer with the income they need to make WordPress awesome.
    Forum volunteers are also not given access to commercial products, so they would not know why your commercial theme or plugin is not working properly. This is one other reason why volunteers forward you to the commercial product’s vendors. The vendors are responsible for supporting their commercial product.

    Thanks for the swift response kmessinger.

    It’s actually for a different site – https://www.lloydfiggins.com – but it’s also commercial. Unfortunately, it’s no longer supported and the author doesn’t respond to emails.

    I quite understand the dichotomy between commercial and community support, and I’m sorry if my post was inappropriate. However, would you mind if I just asked these two general questions:

    1. Is it feasible/likely that my theme is causing the problem? (It sounds like that’s probably the problem)

    2. If I change themes then re-optimize my databases, is that likely to shrink my database to a normal size and solve all my problems? Or is it not that simple?

    Very likely since it hasn’t been updated for over a year.

    I have no idea. You may have to manually delete the tables causing the problem.

    BTW, the site is still up.

    Thank you kindly. Yes, the site is up temporarily as the hosts gave me a larger database capacity for 48hrs.
