How to change appearance of smart quotes to french? ?

I have written a plugin that can be used for when you can’t figure out where something is coming from or when you’d rather not modify theme/plugin files.

The plugin is called Real-Time Find and Replace and it can be found in the WordPress Plugin Repository. With it you would specify the smart quotes as the “find” and the ? ? as the “replace”. You’ll need two rules.

If you have problems getting it to work, post something in the support section of the plugin so I’ll see it.

I know that wptexturize is responsible for the smart quotes. As I understand it draws those from “a” localizsation file. At least that is what the Codex says. It does not specify “a localization file”, though. Is there a way to create a custom translation of just these characters that is kept despite WordPress updates?

No one has reported performance problems to me and according to WordPress there are 10,000+ users. In addition, if you’re using caching then the impact is further reduced.

No doubt there are other ways to solve the problem and you may be onto something with wptexturize. The flexibility is what I like about WordPress. Unfortunately I haven’t worked with wptexturize so I can’t point you to a solution using it.

I’m glad it worked. As for the plugin not showing up in searches I find it hard to describe in terms that people search for. Instead, I rely on word of mouth and reviews on the plugin page in the WordPress repository.

without using a plugin, just via the funtions.php file.

Any inout is welcome. I have found lots of information on how to remove them but I just want to chang them to un-uglify them.
