Hi. When I put in a hyphenated keyword, such as “sepia-toned photograph” Yoast says it can’t find it in the text, description or SEO title. If I remove the hyphen, it works, but it’s grammatically incorrect.

I know this can be worked around, but is there more to this issue? Is it a bug? In my research, I saw a note from 2014 saying it had been fixed. Then another from 2016 saying it had been fixed.

Let me know if there is more information on this.

    Hi @aaron843,

Are you experiencing this issue with Yoast SEO 7.8? I have just tested using the focus keyword “sepia-toned photograph” and the analysis of Yoast SEO seems to be correct, it detects correctly all uses of the focus keywords (in the content, title, meta description, slug).

You can see the results here: https://i.imgur.com/nzVfeZg.png

Additionally, can you confirm that you are using hyphens both in the focus keyword and in your text? For example, using dashes in the content would explain why it’s not recognized.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Ah, I see there was an update 11 hours ago. I will try again after updating. It may be a while, as I usually don’t like to be on the front lines of testing updates.

FYI, I can confirm that the keyword was copy/pasted so it is the same everywhere it was used. I know this is just a back-end issue that doesn’t affect Google’s indexing.

Technically it’s a minus sign, which I guess is not a hyphen. Would that make a difference to Yoast being able to pick it up?

    Thanks!

@aaron843 Using a symbol other than a hypen in the focus keyword and another in the content can result in the SEO analysis not recognizing the focus keyword.
