• I wrote an article, and I published it to a Catagory. It shows up on the main page but when I click on the catagory, or the link from inside manage, it goes to my web hosts “page cannot be found” page…it shows said page in the Post Preview window too.

    Why is this?

  • Sounds like a permalink problem. 404’s should be handled by WP’s 404,php file.
Have you changed the permalink structure? Do you have an .htaccess file?

I am confused. You say your problem is Page related – and I assumed you meant Pages written in the Write > Write Page panel.
Next you say it is an “article” published to a “Category”. Pages do not have categories.

At this point a link would be helpful.

Ok, I am trying the old reinstall since I had only published one thing. Let me try and get the terminology right.

I published a PAGE (like the link you provided) in the Category “Things” on my blog. When I click on the “Things” Category on my Sidebar, I get a 404, from my web host, not from WordPress. I hope that clears it up, like I said, I am new to this. I didnt change any permalink structure that I know of.

What is this option set to? “Options -> Permalinks”

It looks like that may have been it, thanks! Im sure ill be back though.

No, it is still NOT clear. Pages do not have categories, so what you say (publishing a Page into a category) just doesn’t make sense.

I think she’s misusing PAGE for POST.
Just a guess, though as it’s NOT clear.

This thread seems old now, but in searching the forums I haven’t found anything else that comes close to my problem yet. Fortunately, I know the difference between Posts and Pages so maybe someone can help me.

I have my permalinks set up with (/%category%/%postname%/) and the category base as (/.), without parentheses of course, to make my links look less computer generated and to get rid of that top level category that wants to creep into my links. This is supposed to be possible in the new version of wordpress from what I have read so far. I’m using 2.1.3 now.

Everything seems to work fine when I make a post to a category. It shows up on the home page and is listed in the correct category from what it shows in the “Posted In ” area below the post. But, when I click on the link to any category in the sidebar I get a 404 page. It is the 404 page inside wordpress and not from my host.

    Thanks

Update: When I click on a main category it goes to what I think is the archives page. When I click on the sub categories, or children, of a main category I get that 404 page.

I sure hope someone can help me with this one because I have no idea even where to start.

    Thanks
