I am kind of worried by the 4.1 changes. I don’t like ads, statistics, remote storage, JavaScript, etc. I hate seeing my visitors as money-revenue. I just want the old YARPP features, where everything is done locally and transparently. The author of the plug-in being now “Adknowledge”, is there garantee that “YARPP Basic” will preserve the spirit of mitcho’s plug-in? What about the “YARPP Experiments” plug-in: will it continue to be compatible with “YARPP Basic”?

  • Hi Namibia,

I too was slightly concerned about the name change of the developer as well as the additional features added in the 4.1 update.

However after closer reading (and after backing up the old version and updating) it appears for now at least that these features (ads and external calculations) are entirely optional, and are part of the separate YARPP pro service.

    Hope this helps.

Josiah is correct. The YARPP Pro enhancements are only for those users who have asked for and are interested in these features. YARPP Basic is exactly as it has been.

What’s the catch with pro now being free? You mention the crawling happens off site, what is happening with that data? It must be used in some way by 3rd parties for it to be now offered for free?

Hi greengiant. The YARPP Pro enhancements were recently added and are a free feature. (It’s not like they used to cost something and we’ve waived the cost.) Among other features, these enhancements allow publishers to make money from sponsored ads and to become advertisers themselves, but only if they choose.

The crawling happens offsite with YARPP Pro so we can continue to tweak the “relatedness” algorithm without being a load on your server. As more and more pages are clicked, the relevancy of the related posts as well as the ad content improves.

Do I need to know anything about how this data is being used? If I use this plugin on a clients site and then find out that the t&c’s mean you can use their content on other sites I’ll be out of a job. I’m sure you guys aren’t I just need to be sure that the data can’t be used other than for our site.

No, the publisher definitely owns their content. You can see the full terms here: https://www.yarpp.com/publisher-terms

I would just make sure that your client is fine with ad content appearing on their site. If not, you can certainly stick with YARPP Basic.

Ah I see it auto injects ads without opt out? OK makes sense. Thank you for honesty.
