• Often I use a linked image for my posts, this news photo, that half naked celeb… whatever… There are a couple problems with this (and I’m not going to mention the possible moral ones).

    1. The linked image may not always be there, if they move or remove the file then my page looks dumb until I go back and edit the post.

    2. Many servers block hotlinking, meaning that I get one of those “stop stealing our bandwidth ass-face!” stickers instead of the image I’d linked to. Honestly I don’t want to steal their bandwidth anymore than they want me to.

So, to solve these issues I propose a plugin/hack/feature for WordPress (although I’m sure it would be useful in almost any CMS system). As simply as possible it would do this; when a post contained an image link that was not from within the site the plugin would automaticly fetch the image from that site if it is able to, if possible simulating an ie/mozilla enviroment to get past the hotlink blockers, and store that image file with the rest of the sites media. That way you are no longer calling it from an external source and what they do later on won’t affect you, not are you affecting their bandwidth.

The hotlinking feature may be out of the realm of the simple… And so I’m not going to beg and weep for it. I do remember that the opera browser can spoof other browsers in order to get around some (ocassionaly intentional) breakdowns in the rendering of a page. I thought that perhaps this information could be spoofed from within a plug in, but if not then I’m not going to hold my breath.

I’d just like to second the request for this feature, and would like to express my dislike of all the imho OVERreactions to PJ’s request. I think he explained his intentions quite well, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this. At least, I understood him perfectly well.

Now that the dust has settled down a bit….

Welcome PJ to the WordPress forum – one newbie on this board to another.

I want this type of plug in as well! But for different reasons. I want commenters to be able to grab their image off their hard drive or their sites and upload it to sit with their comments.

I can talk most people through simply linking to an image on their own site, but for those visitors new to anything that starts with a < , I’d love to give them a browse button, have them surf the contents of their hard drive and upload their photo.

    Any helpers? Possible?
