    Hi there!

I can’t seem to be able to edit my theme via my wordpress theme editor page. It says: You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information.

But I checked the codex and the information is not at all about this problem. When using blogger, I can do anything I want with my page in just a few seconds, but here I can’t even remove the ads. I can only do it using notepad and uploading in to my ftp server. And when I tried removing the ad, it left a nasty error notification on my webpage.

  • You’ve got to “CHMOD” the themes and theme folder so that it is writable. You need to use your control panel / PHPmyAdmin / something like that to change permissions.

Can you explain that in English please?

something like that to change permissions. How am my supposed to know what to do when even you don’t know…

“Something like that” refers to the fact that I don’t know if your host gave you a control panel, that you can use PHPmyAdmin or whatever system is out there as ‘backend’ of hosting packs. It’s the place where you created your database. Undoubtely there is also a file manager there and you can give rights to folders, such as read to owner, group and world, write to owner group and world and execute owner group and world. Sometimes this works with number, such as 644 or 666. Just make a little effort. “File permissions” is your problem.

My host gave me a cpanel and I can also access the files via Filezilla. The permissions are all set to 666.

But the real question that I am not sure which files have to be so-called 666. My .htaccess file is set to 666 and the theme index.php is also set to 666.

Are there any other files that should have the “666” permission?

    Thank you!

I set the themes file to 777 (and set to to apply to all folders below this), and this works for me….

you can do it with your FTP client as well. Try right clicking on the folder and files you want to CHMOD (depending on what client you use it could be CHMOD, properties or something to that extent).

Well I did everything you suggested but I still can’t edit my theme… something must be wrong… I mean really..if this works for you, how come it never works for me?

    Hey guys!

It works now! It seems that Filezilla did not make the neccessary changes to all the files in the directory, even though it was supposed to. Anyways thank you all for sticking with me til’ the end ??

@mustrebane, you mean you left your theme files available for editing by anyone who wants to do so?

Well that’s what I was told to do….

    Hello,

I cannot edit my theme files within WordPress as well. (Appearance > Editor)

I can see the files, but when I try and click in the box to edit, it is grayed out and I can’t edit or select any text.

I tried to CHMOD the files to 777 and 666, but that didn’t work.

    Any suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks, Derek
