I’ve just about learned the rudiments of html for my website, but I’m a total newbie when it comes to creating a photo blog – and the language is a bit confusing to me.

I searched for as much advice as I could find and then yesterday I downloaded WordPress Version 2.8.4. I completed all the required steps…but can’t seem to get the Installation Screen to appear. My website is https://www.coppercoastworkshops.com and if I type in….

    https://www.coppercoastworkshops.com/wp-admin/install.php OR
    https://www.coppercoastworkshops.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php

I just get a message a blank web page with the message “No input file specified”

The file holding all the WordPress files was added to the site directory that holds all html web pages.

I’ve checked and rechecked the wp-config.php file and it appears to be correct.

Checking through previous posts, most folks seem to be able to get to their installation screen before they encounter problems, so, does anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem? I really would appreciate some help. Thank you.

  • It looks like you’ve installed to `https://www.coppercoastworkshops.com/wordpress/’ because I can read the license.txt file and I can read the wp-admin.css file in https://www.coppercoastworkshops.com/wordpress/wp-admin/wp-admin.css. It also looks like you have an .htaccess file in there since I get a permissions error, not a file not found error, when I try to read it. That .htaccess could mess you up if you haven’t yet installed WP. Try renaming .htaccess to off.htaccess. Also, are you sure that your server supports PHP?

APLJDI…my server definitely supports PHP, that was one of the first things I checked. Incidentally, if I enter https://www.coppercoastworkshops.com/wordpress/wp-admin/wp-admin.css. in my browser I get the following messages

1.The requested URL /wordpress/wp-admin/wp-admin.css. was not found on this server.
    2. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an Error Document to handle the request.

I’m sure that WordPress is already installed. I used note book to look for the .htaccess in wp-admin.css, but couldn’t find any sign of it – am I looking in the right place?

BATRACHOID…I’ve tried just about every permutation like you suggested already after reading all the support files – I thought I’d better do that before asking on the forum – but still no joy.

It’s a bit of a shot in the dark, but do you think that the database I created is somehow corrupt?

Thanks for your suggestions guys, at least I don’t feel all alone now.

Incidentally, if I enter https://www.coppercoastworkshops.com/wordpress/wp-admin/wp-admin.css. in my browser I get the following messages

Only if you include the trailing period. My mistake. I wrapped the around the period at the end of the sentence. Your WP is at https://www.coppercoastworkshops.com/wordpress/.

I’m sure that WordPress is already installed.

But if you never made it to the install screen it can’t be installed, not really. The files are there but the database tables that WP needs aren’t, or shouldn’t be.

No. .htaccess is the name of a file in the WP root directory– https://www.coppercoastworkshops.com/wordpress/.htaccess. If there is one there, it probably shouldn’t be there just yet. You might want it later though.

Thank you apljdi, I do appreciate you giving your time to help. I’d have replied a bit quicker, but it was getting on for 1.30am, I ain’t so young as I was and my brain was addled…

I can’t find .htaccess anywhere, so perhaps that’s not the problem.

But if you never made it to the install screen it can’t be installed, not really. The files are there but the database tables that WP needs aren’t, or shouldn’t be.

I’ve done on a search, but can’t find any reference to finding out whether wordpress is properly installed. Is there something I should do, or at least check to see if it’s properly installed.

    Thanks….Seoirse

    Try a fresh install.

I don’t know if there is a reference for telling you if WP is properly installed. There is quite a list of things that could go bad. You seem to have nothing committed yet, batrachoid’s suggestion isn’t a bad one.

    Thanks Batrachoid

I’ve deleted all the wordpress files from the website, hard-drive and even the zipped file that I originally downloaded. I thought that I might as well start from scratch and try and eliminate all potential problems. So I’ve downloaded it again.

Last time I unzipped it into a file of all my website stuff on the hard drive, modified the config file there and then copied the whole lot over to my site by FTP.

So before I start again, is this the best way to do it?

And should I install it as before, alongside all my website pages and files, or should I install it a level higher, where there are files like webalizer, infobots etc

I need to try and get it right this time!

    Thanks…Seoirse

…alongside all my website pages and files…

What does this mean? You aren’t installing to an empty directory? You can have other stuff in the same directory as WP but you can’t have anything named the same as a WP file and things like an .htaccess file can cause trouble. .htaccess is a hidden file, by the way, you may have to change your ftp software settings to see it. You need to install WP in your web-root or in a subfolder of the web-root. If you install higher than the web-root it won’t run. The directory you put the wordpress folder in last time is the web-root, but you don’t need the wordpress folder itself unless you want it.

    SUCCESS!

I re-installed the wordpress files to my website, as per your suggestions – received the install window and Eureka! I was in my dashboard.

It’s probably not the end of my problems, but one step at a time.

Thank you apljdi and batrachoid, your help is really appreciate.
