• Hi there,

I am new to WordPress – I want to edit my website (which was last edited before Christmas last year) a web designer created the website, then handed it back to us. However, I have just logged on to the dashboard and there is nowhere, no link, nothing to edit the website? I have since found out that there should be tools along the left hand side of the dashboard where I can find the editing information, and the website should appear on the main screen. But there is nothing. The website is still live. https://www.millchris.com

The only things on my dashboard screen are an empty box, WordPress Blog and WordPress News. There is also a message to say – “WordPress 4.1.1 is available! Please notify the site administrator.” I have a feeling this could be the root of the problem, but as a novice, I have no idea how to install the new version etc.

Any help or clues as to why I can’t edit my website would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Holly

Typically, different users will be presented with different content in the dashboard depending on their assigned role (e.g. admin, editor, subscriber, etc). Can you go to your profile and see what role you’re logged in as?

Also, ‘WordPress Blog’ isn’t one of the default modules in the dashboard. What do you see there? Maybe your developer set up a simplified gateway for you?

    Hi Bill,

Thank you for getting back to me.

I can’t see where I would find where it tells me what I’m logged in as? It has a choice of ‘Admin colours’? So would that mean I’m logged in as Admin?

Oh right.. regarding the WordPress Blog…when I expand the module it shows latest WordPress news, for example, the upgrade?

I have spoken to our developers and they have said they have never seen that happen before in WordPress, so without us backing up the website, they don’t want to touch it.

    Thanks again,

    Holly

    Hi Holly,

It has a choice of ‘Admin colours’? So would that mean I’m logged in as Admin?

Probably, but at the top right corner of the dashboard, where (if) it says “howdy, ‘username'”, hover that and select ‘Edit my Profile’ to see if user panels come up. If you’re an admin, editing another user will show you their role. If not, you won’t see and can’t edit another user.

It’s a good idea to back up your site before going any further. Log in to your web hosting account and use cPanel or whatever tools your host has for this. Download a database backup, and also a full-site backup. Usually these only require one click for each task and you’re done. (Check with your hosting provider if you aren’t sure how to do these steps.)

Once you have your backups, while still in your hosting account, find wp-content/plugins and rename the plugins folder to plugins-hold. That will disable them. Then check to see if your WP admin dashboard page looks any different. If so, you can rename the plugins folder back to the original. Let me know how it goes.

I am having this issue with a site I help manage. Bill, I tried to follow your directions from above, but when I’m in file management in Bluehost, it doesn’t let me rename files and I don’t know where else to do it. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I am so baffled!
