I can't switch over to visual
-
I’m editing a new post which I copy and pasted the html code for from a previous post. It won’t switch over to the visual editor no matter what I try! ??
What’s up?
-
askawiseman.com is the site but I don’t see how that makes a difference. :-/
Apparently there’s a lot of people with this same problem. If having to manually install it fixes the problem, then there was some problem on WordPress’s end in the automatic update. There was no problem before the update.
If having to manually install it fixes the problem
Did it fix the problem? That’s what we’re asking you.
See, the thing is your site is special. It has a problem. The vast, vast majority of sites did not have this problem. So, we need to figure out what the problem is.
However, we’re not you and we don’t have access to your site. That’s why we tell you to try things, so as to give us information so that we can diagnose the problem.
– If you switch to the default theme and the problem goes away, then we know the problem is in the theme.
– If you disable a plugin and the problem goes away, then we know the problem is in a plugin.
– If you do a manual install and the problem goes away, then something went wrong with the automatic installation process.
We’re not giving you ANSWERS here, we’re giving you diagnostic advice. We want to figure out the problem and give you a proper solution. But we’re not magicians. We can’t wave a wand and make the problem disappear.
Before we can solve a problem, we have to find the problem. If we knew what the problem was, then we’d have already solved it and it would not exist anymore.
People with problems have those problems because they have not been solved yet.
Okay I’m trying to use filezilla. The first thing it says is to click on file and then “site manager”. Under file there is no “site manager”. So, I don’t understand how to use it. It says I’m logged on, so I don’t think that’s the problem.
Also, your site at https://askawiseman.com/ appears to be somewhat broken entirely right now. You’re missing the index.php file, among other things. And you have some kind of 3.4.2 to 3.5 patch that was definitely not part of any automatic upgrade process we support.
A manual install is indicated by your site simply because you are clearing missing files on it.
hoodleehoo: Do you have FTP access to your site? How do you normally manage the files on your website, outside of WordPress?
Via the control panel from hostgator. I haven’t touched any of the files at all before trying to manually reinstall based on the suggestion in this thread. And all I’ve done is take the recent download and upload the files one at a time, telling it to replace the files as it uploads. There should not be any files missing as I haven’t deleted anything.
I’m going to be so mad is anything on my site is missing! The moderator on this thread said it wouldn’t mess anything up!
I got rid of the patch file (no idea where that came from, but it was put there on Dec. 18th and I haven’t uploaded anything ever before today).
It didn’t fix the problem so I put it back.
It’s unlikely anything on your site is missing. The content is in the database, not in the files.
You should be able to upload the wp-admin and wp-includes directories whole, not one file at a time. You also need to upload all the files in the “root” of the site.
If you want to email me your login and FTP information, I can take a quick look at the file structure and do any repairs for you. You can email me at otto at www.ads-software.com.
Regarding the patch file, presumably you upgraded on Dec. 18th? How did you do that upgrade?
I never did any upgrade. All upgrades would be automatic. I don’t mess with any of that.
I can’t upload a folder, only individual files. It would be nice if I could just upload the folder!!!
But even if I did upload the folder, it would delete the old folder wouldn’t it? That would not be good, if I understand correctly.
I’m trying to use filezilla, but I’m having problems with that. When filezilla comes up it looks nothing like the pictures of the program I see online. Under file there is only the options to reconnect, disconnect, and exit.
Yeah, you must be running an incredibly old version or something. I dunno.
Like I said, email me your login info and I’ll fix it up for you if you want.
Thanks for the offer, I’d hate to make you do it for me, though! I did some research and found out that I downloaded the server and not the client (the wordpress filezilla page probably ought to be updated to correct that). I have the client and am connected via ftp.
Should I just upload the two main folders? I’m assuming this will delete the entire contents of the old folders. I’m not touching the content folder, so I know that stuff will be safe. But, is it safe to just completely replace the other two folders? I wanted to ask before doing it.
Thanks for your help guys I really appreciate it!
The Manual Update instructions are here:
https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress#Manual_UpdateBut basically, you upload the wp-includes and wp-admin folders, and also everything in the “root” folder of the site. As long as you leave wp-content alone, then you won’t lose your themes and plugins and such, and as long as you leave wp-config.php alone, it will remember where your database is.
It’s generally pretty easy, but read the instructions for explicit details.
I’m getting a similar problem as hoodleehoo. However, I have the tool bars, but when I click the “Update” button I’m taken to Page Not Found. But this is only on existing pages and posts. New ones are fine. I’m not sure if this is related; if I don’t locate a similar forum thread I’ll begin a new one.
