I can’t update Wordfence 7.1.1 to Wordfence 7.1.3

  • I got the following error message:

    “An error occurred while updating Wordfence Security: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions. lib/.htaccess.old, models/.htaccess.old, tmp/.htaccess.old, views/.htaccess.old”

    Please let me know how to update the plugin.

  • Hi Valentin,
    I recommend checking these files permissions. In general, permissions should be 755 (directories) and 644 (files), owned by the same user under which PHP is running. Also, you could delete the whole plugin folder by connecting to your website via FTP then reinstall the plugin via WordPress Dashboard.

    I have the same issue. Please advise without assuming that I know as much as you do about IT.
    My expertise is elsewhere.

    Sorry for that, in this case I believe there are two choices:

    1- Learn how to do these stuff.
    If you took this approach, then there are three main things you need to learn about:
    * Permissions in WordPress.
    * Manage file permissions and ownership in Linux.
    * How to use FileZilla to change permission, or manage files and folders permissions and ownership via SSH.

    Please follow the tutorials links I linked to above.

    2- Report this issue to someone (your server admin or your hosting provider), with my previous reply referenced and they should be able to fix this issue for you.

    It would help if the message said which file permissions need changing.

    I was also having this issue. I checked all file permissions were set to 644 for all files and 755 for all directories within this plugin folder. They already were.

    I also specifically checked the file permissions for the htaccess.old files mentioned:
    lib/.htaccess.old, models/.htaccess.old, tmp/.htaccess.old, views/.htaccess.old

    All were already set to 644 and I was still getting the error.

    I was able to resolve this by deleting these 4 problematic files via FTP (I don’t think the .old files are necessary anyway as they aren’t in the latest release) then running the update again from the wordpress admin.

    I hope this solution assists anyone else with this problem.
