I find this backup plug-in invaluable and use it for all my client websites.

The backup options are pretty extensive. I use Updraft to backup to Google drive so I have off-site (well not on my hosting company’s server) backups. I know you can backup to a lot more external systems.

I’ve had to restore a few times and this has always worked flawlessly. Of course successful restore gives you the confidence that the restore will work when you need it most.
