I get a validation error when using selectable recipient with pipes

I am using Selectable recipient with pipes on a form and I get a validation error. I am following the instructions on this page: https://contactform7.com/selectable-recipient-with-pipes/
It is working perfectly, but my form backend displays “Invalid mailbox syntax is used.” Is there something that can be done to make it valid?
