I have a suggestion that would make this plugin better. Most of the spammers I have now are using two-letter usernames (i.e. “ab”, “bb”, “mz”, etc.). What if you added an option that checked the username length for a minimum character count. Such an option could be set to allow the admin to decide the minimum allowable username length.

I also noticed that many spammers use email addresss that have many periods (“.”). What if your plugin checked for an excessive amount of periods (suppose that four or more before the “@” is excessive).

    Thanks for your wonderful plugin,

  • I made the change to the user name. I added it to the check long code and username has to be greater than two characters in length.

The dots, however, are allowed by RFC rules. Some users actually use them. The dots are ignored in email names so some users put extra dots in their email name to determine if a website has spammed them. Since the dots are ignored, the email still works, but the user can tell where the email came from by the number and position of the dots. I am assuming that the spammer is doing this also. Since multiple dots are used by legitimate users I don’t want to add the check.

Thanks for implementing my “username minimum length” idea. Again, thanks for your wonderful plugin.

If you would like, you can write an article about your plugin and place it on my website (https://dcjtech.info/) to help promote your work. If you are interested, you can register for an account on my website and then either –

    1. email the article to me and I post it under your username so you still get credit as the author

    2. post it under https://dcjtech.info/forum/admin-desk/public-submissions/ and then I will move it to the proper article area

Alternately, you can paste the article on https://dcjtech.info/contact-us/ and then use the email address and name that you would like me to use for your account that I can setup for you.

    Devyn,

Thanks for the generous offer, but I don’t “promote” the plugin. I wrote it for myself. I put it out for anyone who wants it, but there is no advantage in getting more people to use it. I make less than $10 a month in donations. I need fewer users, not more.
