• Ok, so this is a retrospective post as I have solved the problem, but I’m confused as to why it happened and having searched in vain for the right solution perhaps this will help someone fix their own css problems.

Recently a site I run, simply lost all it’s styling overnight. I had recently updated WP to 4.0.1, but I didn’t think that that would have been a problem, but just to check, I activated the default theme and nothing changed. So it wasn’t a theme problem.

I only run a few plugins, but I deactivated them all and still nothing. Bear in mind I’m clutching at straws…

I read forums and posts, but the search criteria of “lost my css styling” brought-up too many diverse responses to find a cure. Finally searching the Codex (love that term incidentally) I realised that it might be a permissions problem, so I searched for permissions settings for wp-content and it suggested 755 or less, mine were at 754 so I upped them to 755 – lo and behold it fixed it.

So more by luck than judgement I sorted the problem.

The thing is, I haven’t touched my permissions since installing the site, so I have no idea why this could have occurred. It would be nice if someone could explain – in layman’s terms if poss’, and perhaps either leave this post live for others to read or put this solution somewhere in the Codex where my fellow WP’s can find it.

Anyway, on the flip-side, it’s 10:13 on a Friday and I had set-aside all day to fix this so maybe I’ll go and do some Christmas shopping.
    Much love – Simon

What do you mean by “lost styling”? Just another way of saying white screen of death?

Purely as an aside, who knew that 666 the number of the beast allows reading and writing, but no executions. Seems weird! The real number of the beast is 111 – no reading, no writing, just executions. 666 is in fact the number of the Librarian!

    Andrew,
The pages served-up left justified text only – no images, no colour, simply black text on a white background. Dashboard looked OK though!

Does the issue persist after you clear your browser’s cache?

I can’t remember if I tried emptying my cache to resolve it, but several people checked the site when it was broken and it always looked the same to them.

You do know that I fixed it right? I was simply looking for an explanation as to why it might have happened.

Oh right. You should check your site’s error logs to see of any anomalies at the time,
