• Hi all,
I posted earlier about a permalinks problem…and it occurred to me that I may be asking the wrong question. Perhaps I should consider whether permalinks are even a needed option for me. From what I understand of them, they are a permanent link to whatever entry they point to…am I right? If I understand correctly, they would serve the purpose of say…having your very first post introducing yourself via weblog…permanently posted on your index.php. Am I too far off here?I would really like to be able to do this…but I’m getting a 404 page not found error each time I use the function. I’ve updated simlinks in my .htaccess file and I’ve copied and pasted various combinations from wp-admin.php to see if I could get it working…but if I’m misunderstanding the purpose of permalinks…then I’m swinging a bat blindly. Can someone put me in the right place?

  • Permalinks make for URIs that are
    1) easily remembered
    2)Search Engine friendlier
    3) Cleaner.

Yes, you are far off. You can do this just as well by linking to a non-permalinked post.
Have you installed the blog in a subdirectory? If yes, then you could put the .htaccess in the subdir, with the options symlink thing on top of it.
A 404 error means your permalinks are working, but redirecting to the wrong place.
    Chill!

cool…now I understand. I now know what to search the boards for to find what I need…thanks 2fargon.

    strangely.
1 of the main requirement of being a google news source (i heard this from a friend whose blog is a news source for google news) is the ability to have your articles with unique numbers and normal URIs fulfil that pretty sweetly. the new URIs might not be so friendly afterall! ??
but they sure look nice! ??
