I need to add a slider to the zerif-lite theme in place of the background image

Hello world, I am new to word press but I have some experience in html and css. I am working on a website for my university and my boss likes the zerif-light theme. The only problem is that he wants a responsive slider in place of the standard background image. I have a few ideas about how I should go about editing the code to make this possible, but I am for the most part lost. So my question is, does anyone have the knowledge and the heart to help this poor ol’ student with adding a slider to the zerif-lite theme inplace of the background image?
