Users to my site still can’t view most of the videos on my site, and none of the images in the NexGen gallery. The perplexing thing is that three videos are viewable. I have to check on the status of the post I made for the NexGen gallery problem, but my gut tells me that the problems are related and may date back to when I upgraded to WP 3.0.1.

I’ve verified that the problem isn’t a hack or virus. I’ve reinstalled WP 3.0.1 and changed all the passwords.

Now, given that three of the videos work fine, I figured I would download one of the videos that doesn’t work to the copy of the site on my Macbook. The video I chose is in the same exact folder that one of the videos that works is in. Given the folder has one video that works & one that doesn’t, it would make sense that the problem would be related to the individual video files.

After downloading the video, I created a post that pointed to it & played it. The video played fine. I did nothing else to the video file, I just downloaded it, put it in a folder, created a post & put the Vipers Video Quicktag in the post for the video.

Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem could be? What should I be looking at? This is getting very frustrating as everything I’ve looked at hasn’t fixed the problem.

    Thanks for any help

    Tony

  • A link to the site would help, and specifically to the posts with the videos in it.

Here is a link to a video that DOES NOT play and is the one that I downloaded to my Mac Book:

    https://churchonhigherground.org/worship/sermons/2010/04/10-0411-01/

And here is a link to a video that DOES play:

    https://churchonhigherground.org/worship/sermons/2010/04/10-0404-01/

These are both in the same physical folder:

    /worship/wp-content/blogs.dir/5/files/2010/04/

Thanks again & sorry I forgot the links in the first post.

“Video not found or access denied” Check the file permissions to start. And trying to access the file directly, I get a 500 server error.

(Coincidentally, one of those was on my birthday)

    Andrea:

Yes, that’s right, that’s the problem I’m having. The file permissions are set to 755 for all files & folders under blogs.dir.

    For this one: https://churchonhigherground.org/worship/sermons/2010/04/10-0411-01/

What’s the DIRECT URL to the video?

Well it’s definitely something server-side, as like I said earlier, access the video URL directly leads to a 500 error. So it’s specific to THAT video ON the server.

Tony, are you using JWplayer in another folder from the root? I think this may be a JWplayer issue and not a permission problem

Thanks, Andrea. It wouldn’t show when I looked from work.

And. It’s an error 500 on that file. It’s the server/file permissions, for sure.

As I said, the file permissions are all set to 755. Should I change them?

DJTwittr: Well, I have JWPlayer installed where ever Viper’s video Quicktags put it. I don’t believe that’s in the root. WP is not in the root, either.

Further, the server generates the 500 error if you go to the direct URL, which should download the file.

I’m going to try to upload that file I downloaded back to the server & see if that makes a difference.

    Tony

there’s more permissions that 755. Like ownership.

I’m not quite sure what your last post means, but I will try uploading that file again tonight.

Thanks for all your help, I do appreciate your time.

Ownership means what account, on the SERVER, owns a file.

If I go to a folder (via SSH) and type ll I get a list of files with details:

    -rw-r--r-- 1 ipstenu ipstenu 397 Nov 17 08:58 index.php

See how it has my name twice? That means it’s owned by ID ipstenu, member of GROUP ipstenu.

    What are yours?

    ipstenu:

I understand what you mean now. My site is hosted using FatCow and I don’t have access to a shell program (That I’m aware of). They have a File Manager application in the Control Panel application, but that doesn’t show who owns the files.

I’m at work, too, so that means I can’t use FTP tools to look, either, assuming they’ll give me that information. Will FileZilla give me the owner name?

    Thanks again

Just for giggles, I decided to change the permissions on one of the problem videos to 777, which I believe is full access (Read, Write & Execute) for everyone. It made no difference, the video still will not play.

We’ll see what happens after I upload the video back to the server tonight.
