I need to hack the header in Magazine Basic by Bavotasan

I’m going to be rolling out this new online-only newspaper site in a couple weeks. I’ll be using the Magazine Basic theme by Bavotasan. I love the theme, but I could love it any more.

What I want to do is to move the graphic header image from the space that runs across the entire width of the site, and move it lower, the the middle column. This would effectively allow the two sidebars to straddle the header and start right below the menu.

Hacking the index.php, page.php and single.php to show the new header image will be very simple.

But I am not sure how to hack the header.php page to not display the header image any longer.
