I/O overload with iThemes Security enabled

  • I’m hosting my low-traffic WordPress 4.9.1 site on GoDaddy. My site has been terribly slow (frontend and admin) for the past 3+ months. I finally disabled all plugins and have isolated iThemes Security as the culprit. With this plugin disabled, the I/O metric is close to flat. The P3 performance plugin verified this, also.

    I see multiple tickets from site owners complaining about the same problem. What is going on with this plugin that any access to a page would be so horribly slow? What I/O operations are happening?
