I’m trying to change the look of my pastor’s blog, in Firefox, all is as it should be, but IE seems to be another story altogether.

I’ve actually got everything validated, so if anyone can help me spot where I may have missed something, I’d certainly appreciate it.

Ah, the old MSIE CSS bugs got you, too. The width of the sidebar is just enough for it to overlap the content section which causes it to be shoved down below. You can increase the padding (space) between the two “columns” or check out some of the helpful hints at Positioniseverything the best place to solve your browser alignment problems.

What I don’t understand is that I am using the exact same structure on Byron’s site as I use on my own:
    https://byron-harvey.com
    https://steelerdirtfreak.com/blog/

I don’t have either of the problems with my site, so I can’t figure out why mine behaves in IE and his has these two major issues.

The header image is really confusing me, as it appears correctly for 2 to 3 seconds before ‘jumping’ to the left. I can’t find anything that is causing that.

In checking a little more, I just noticed that the header issue is only on the ‘front’ page; individual posts pages display the header just fine.

I also had a friend email to say that he didn’t see the header issue, it was all good from his view.

Here is a screen shot of IE on the front page:

And here is a screen shot on a post page:

Is anyone else seeing the ‘wonky’ front page?

IE is giving a javascript error for me on that site and FF is telling me that a script is causing my computer to run slow and may stop responding.

    Thread Starter steelerdirtfreak

    (@steelerdirtfreak)

IF I read the Firefox JavaScript Console correctly ( a BIG if, since it displays differently everytime I try to use it), I think I have removed the script that was poorly written – it was a news headline box.

And how do you get IE to tell you any kind of error? All I can get is in the staus bar – “done but with errors” – and no idea as to what the errors are.

And still, with the exact same template and stylesheet, I get one blog working in IE (steelerdirtfreak.com/blog/) and one that isn’t – (byron-harvey.com)

    Lorelle

    (@lorelle)

If you double click on the “done but with errors”, you may be able to see the errors. Honestly, if it is jumping, then the problem is with one of the bugs I mentioned earlier.

Did you check out the hacks and fixes from https://www.positioniseverything.net/ ? That might just solve your problem. Also, have you run the page through a bunch of validators to test it out?

    Thread Starter steelerdirtfreak

    (@steelerdirtfreak)

Using the W3 validators, the xhtml validates, the style sheet, by it self, validates, but if I enter in the site address, I get this error message:

    Target: https://byron-harvey.com

Please, validate your XML document first!

    Line 384

    Column 443

Element type “null” must be followed by either attribute specifications, “>” or “/>”.

And I have absolutely no idea of what that means or how to find it.

If I check any of the theme files, I have no way of telling which one might be registering as that line number to the validator, and in trying to look over them, I so far haven’t found anything that would have the word null in it.

So as if i wasn’t confused enough, now I’ve got W3 telling me in two ways everything validates, but in a third way it tells me it doesn’t.

    Nick Momrik

    (@mtdewvirus)

The validator is using the HTML code that is spit out after WP outputs the page, so you have to use the line and column numbers from where. Use the View Source option in your browser.

Ah, I should have said the CSS validator was what was causing the problem.

    Thread Starter steelerdirtfreak

    (@steelerdirtfreak)

And now it validates as well, so I’m going to go beat my head on the wall for a few minutes and then come back and see what else I can blow up.

I’ve looked at that site, but to tell you the truth, I don’t have a clue as to where to even start. Most of the stuff there seems to be so far over my head that it means nothing to me.

If I could find something specific that was broke, I’d know where to start, but apparently nothing is broke, it just doesn’t work on this particular site. If something was broke, it should be broke on both sites (as well as about 7 or 8 others that I help out with).

    Thread Starter steelerdirtfreak

    (@steelerdirtfreak)

Well, I appear to have stumbled across the solution in spite of my self.

I simply removed all of his javascript blogrolls from the side bar and created a seperate ‘Blog Rolls’ page. I’m not sure how that will affect how his blog is tracked by the ecosystem and all that, but at this point, that is the least of my worries!

Never fails – a good brisk head banging session will always clear the brain!

I know that Positioniseverything is a bit overwhelming, but look for the clues as to what your page is doing that is “wrong” in the browser. Clue words are jumping, blinking, flashing, disappearing, shifting, moving, and overlapping. These all relate to screwed up code and browser problems.

But it sounds like you’ve figured it out or at least isolated it. I believe in head banging – especially when brick is involved. It’s amazing how it can clear things up – including the sinuses.
