• I did the MAMP thing several years ago, and got an up-and-running successful site since then. I remember the MAMP setup being relatively painless.

However, I want to re-do MY site, and do another site for a friend. The “new” sites will all be hosted on my same (existing) server. One new site will replace my current site, and the other will be on a new subdomain.

On my mac I had a really old MAMP app, and a WordPress 3.1 folder (lol) so I downloaded the latest MAMP, started up the servers…and realized: “um, am I duplicating my efforts here?”

?? Do I need to re-set-up everything? PHP? MySQL? etc?

Also: since I’m re-doing MY existing site (with a different theme, slightly different content), is there anything to be wary of?

  • If you are using a remote server, you don’t need MAMP or WP installed on your computer at all?

Or are you trying to set up a local install to work on the site(s) before moving them to the server?

    Hmmm.

I guess that’s what i was thinking: set up a local install to work on the site(s) before moving them to the server?

But if i don’t have to (if I can work online, for both the NEW and UPDATE) I would actually prefer to do that I think.

I set up my single site that way before (MAMP first) even though I was on a remote server. Lol, maybe I went crazy?

The local and remote sites won’t be connected, and it’s somewhat involved to move a site, so yes, it’s often easier to work online.

You can make a separate install of WP in a sub-directory (or sub-domain) – and set up your new site there – and when ready to go, see:
