• …I used this to save the custom formatting of my site before updating as I’d just lost some changes on another site after a theme update, however as soon as I created the child theme my whole site died with a fatal error because the custom code was in the main theme and the child. Fortunately I was able to delete the child theme via ftp and get back in to reactivate the original theme without losing any of the customisations!

If you HAVEN’t YET ADDED CUSTOM CODE To funtions.php, It should all be well, but if you have already, cut them now and paste them into the child theme afterwards!

?? not sure why this happenned as the child theme creates a nearly empty functions.php and the current version of WordPress loads the parent theme’s function.php in a cascade.

What version of WordPress were you using? Maybe I can add a patch to child theme in the old style when’s he WordPress version is old (unfortunately the code doesn’t mention when they changed the behavior)

WordPress 4.1.1 Running woocommerce storefront theme. I had 2 bits of customisation in the functions.php of the storefront theme. Once the customisations were removed, the child theme was created without incident and is now working well with the customisations added to the child.
