• So on Thursday I clicked the update button to my college newspaper site esgonline.org and immediately afterwards I was met with errors and every time I tried to log in to the dashboard, it gave me an error message.

Searching that error message, I deduced that I needed to log in via FTP to manually upload everything.

    This is the new error.

warning: require(/data/domains/esgonline/wp-includes/load.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /data/domains/esgonline/wp-settings.php on line 21

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/data/domains/esgonline/wp-includes/load.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/local/share/pear’) in /data/domains/esgonline/wp-settings.php on line 21

Another problem, and I’ll say it’s foolish on my part… but I of course didn’t back the files up. Most of them are still available to me on the school’s computer, so it’s not a large issue. We are in the process of completely rebuilding the site anyways, but still.

I did not backup, because I kind of just assumed it would be like a regular update where you just download and install. I’m still pretty new to using wordpress and as of yet, have not been doing much aside from regular maintenance to the existing site. Which was going fine until this :/

    I’m distressed.

Did you replace your wp-content folder as you should never replace this folder as this where you have your themes, plugins and uploads.

Using ftp try delete all files and folders except wp-content folder if you still have it and wp-config.php file.

Okay, I tried to delete those folders in the ftp but it says Permissions: Denied.

You will need to check your permissions by logging in host account or use ftp. folders need to be 755 and files 644

I checked the permissions on the files and they’re set to both 755 and 644 where appropriate. Does this have something to do with the user?
