I want to start putting ads on my blog but have no idea how?

Need help/guidance please. I would like to put ad sense ads and also some affiliate program ads on the sides of my blog but have no idea how. I have downloaded a few plug-ins but still can’t figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
