    Hi there,

This is happening because you’re using Jetpack’s built-in Image CDN that relies on WordPress.com. If you like to disable that feature go to your Dashboard > Jetpack > Settings > Performance and toggle off the Enable site accelerator option under the Performance & speed section. You can read more about this feature here:

But I want to use the site accelerator.

This is something that has worked before. Links from an image to other sites work fine. But it doesn’t work to wikimedia pages that end in .jpg

To me, this looks like a bug.

    Hi –

Looks like the site recently updated to Jetpack 8.5, the most recent update. So, I think that you may have to rule out a conflict. This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Twenty theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.
If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

I started a new wordpress blog. The only plugin installed is Jetpack. (Akismet and Hello Dolly was removed) Theme is 20-20.

I added one post with a link from the image to a wikimediapage ending with .jpg.

When activating the site accelerator for images the problem is there again.

So this still looks like a bug to me.

What happens if you use a default WordPress theme like Twenty Nineteen? You can test it on a local installation so you don’t affect the live version of your site.

Or, there’s a plugin that you could use for this purpose:

In my last answer I used a new clean installation and used the 20-20 theme. I thought that was enough to prove that this is a bug.

I changed theme to 20-19, and the problem is still there.
(I have also seen this bug in 20-14 and in Sela from Automattic)

There are no other plugins than Jetpack in my new clean installation.

Thank you for all the details, I have reported the issue here. You can check there for updates or comment with more details.

In the meantime, I would suggest removing the link from the image, adding it as a caption instead.
